1. Introduction
Jump & Say ("we", "our", or "us") provides an interactive English learning application designed for children ages 3–12 and their parents or guardians ("you"). This Privacy Policy explains what information the app handles, how it is used, and the rights you have over it.
We designed Jump & Say with privacy by default: most data stays on the device, and we do not maintain user accounts or upload personal information to our servers.
2. Information We Collect
The app may handle the following categories of information strictly on your device ("On-Device Only"):
- Profile data (optional, set by a parent in onboarding): the child's nickname, age range, and gender avatar preference. Stored locally in the iOS app sandbox.
- Learning progress: which lessons have been started, completed, and the score achieved in self-graded speaking activities.
- Membership status: a non-personal flag indicating whether an in-app subscription is active, retrieved from Apple's receipt system (StoreKit) and cached locally.
- App settings: language preference, sound effects on/off, and motion-control sensitivity.
In addition, when you interact with certain learning features, the following are processed in real time and discarded immediately:
- Camera frames: used only to detect the player's position on screen for selection and jumping. Frames are not recorded, not transmitted, and not stored.
- Microphone audio: used only to score spoken pronunciation against a target word. Audio is processed by Apple's on-device speech recognition and is not transmitted to us.
- Device motion: the iOS accelerometer is read locally to detect a "jump" gesture; no motion data leaves the device.
3. Information We Do Not Collect
We do not collect, transmit, or sell:
- Real names, email addresses, phone numbers, or home addresses.
- Photos, video recordings, or audio recordings.
- Precise or coarse location data.
- Persistent device identifiers used for cross-app tracking (no IDFA, no GAID).
- Contact lists, calendar entries, or other on-device personal data.
- Any data entered by children for advertising, profiling, or sale to third parties.
4. How We Use Information
Information processed by the app is used only to:
- Personalize which Level/Book content is shown next.
- Evaluate spoken responses and award stars.
- Display correct content after the user unlocks premium material via in-app purchase.
- Remember in-app settings between sessions.
We do not use any data for behavioural advertising, profiling, automated decision-making with legal effects, or any commercial purpose beyond the educational service itself.
5. Camera & Microphone Permissions
Jump & Say requests the following iOS permissions. You may decline any of them; the related feature will not function but the rest of the app remains usable:
- NSCameraUsageDescription — to estimate the child's position so they can select answers by moving and jumping.
- NSMicrophoneUsageDescription — to record short voice clips used only for pronunciation scoring in the "Speak & Follow" mode.
- NSSpeechRecognitionUsageDescription — to transcribe the short voice clip into text for accuracy scoring.
Raw camera frames and audio bytes are processed within the same inference pass and discarded in milliseconds. They never reach a network endpoint.
6. In-App Purchases & Subscriptions
Subscription tiers (Weekly, Monthly, Yearly) are sold through Apple's App Store using StoreKit 2. Apple acts as the merchant of record and processes payment data under Apple's privacy terms. We receive from Apple only:
- A non-personal transaction identifier,
- The product identifier and expiration date of the active subscription, and
- A boolean indicating whether the subscription is currently entitled.
To review or cancel a subscription, open iOS Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions. Auto-renewal can be turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Unused portions of a free trial are forfeited when a subscription is purchased.
7. Third-Party Services
Jump & Say does not embed third-party analytics, advertising SDKs, social-login SDKs, or remote-config SDKs.
The only system-level services the app interacts with are:
- Apple Foundation / Speech framework — on-device speech recognition.
- Apple Vision framework — on-device body-pose estimation.
- Apple StoreKit 2 — subscription and receipt validation.
- Apple CryptoKit — local decryption of bundled content packs.
- Apple Push Notification service — only if you opt in to learning reminders.
Each of these is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
8. Children's Privacy (COPPA & GDPR-K)
Jump & Say is intended for children under 13 (COPPA) and under 16 in EU/UK member states (GDPR-K). We honour the following protections:
- No account required. No email, password, or username is ever collected from a child.
- No behavioural advertising. The app contains no ads and no ad-tech SDKs.
- No third-party tracking. We do not allow third parties to collect information from children through the app.
- Verifiable parental consent: the onboarding flow is designed so that a parent or guardian selects the child's age range and nickname on behalf of the child before any learning feature is exposed.
- Parental controls inside the app: motion-control sensitivity, sound effects, and notification reminders can all be toggled from a single Settings screen reachable without a password.
9. Data Security
We protect the limited data the app handles through industry-standard measures: the iOS app sandbox for storage, AES-256-GCM encryption for bundled content packs, and Apple's on-device frameworks for speech/pose inference. We do not transmit personal data over the network, so the typical "data-in-transit" risk does not apply.
10. Data Retention
- On-device learning data is retained until you delete the app, tap Reset All Data, or restore the device.
- Apple-managed subscriptions are retained per Apple's retention rules; we do not retain backups of those records.
- Camera frames and audio clips are processed in memory and discarded within seconds — they are never written to disk.
11. International Data Transfers
Because we do not operate our own user database, no user-controlled personal data is transferred internationally by us. Subscription entitlements processed by Apple may cross borders as described in Apple's privacy policy.
12. Your Rights & Choices
Depending on where you live, you may have some or all of the following rights:
- Access: request a copy of any data we hold about you (we will confirm none).
- Deletion: request deletion of any data — usually satisfied by uninstalling the app.
- Withdraw consent: you can revoke camera/microphone/notification permissions at any time in iOS Settings.
- Lodge a complaint: with your local data-protection authority.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes in our practices or for legal, operational, or regulatory reasons. When we do, we will revise the "Effective Date" above and, where the change is material, surface an in-app notice the next time you open Jump & Say. Continued use of the app after a material change indicates acceptance of the updated policy.
